A Profile of our new Castle Warden, John Jack

By Stuart Menzies

John writes as follows on his family, upbringing, his education and career :

“I was born in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, 52 years ago. I am a member of Clan Jack, historian and genealogist. Following my education at Queen Anne High School, Dunfermline, I completed my electrical engineering apprenticeship. I began work as a technician in Nuclear Submarines, later in whisky distilleries north of Inverness  and then in hospitals in Fife. In 1960 I emigrated to Australia working there for 15 years, initially in the grain industry of the Darling Downs, Queensland, and later managing the electrical maintenance departments of resort hotels on  Queensland ’s Gold Coast. From 2001 to 2004 I studied History at Toowoomba University, Queensland. My three grown sons and two grandsons are still residing in Australia. On returning to Scotland in 2004 I worked in Perthshire for two years before being selected by The Menzies Charitable Trust to be Administrator for Castle Menzies, beginning this challenging assignment in January, 2007. I am a keen longbow archer, motorcyclist, climber and history student, especially in Scottish heritage. I am very proud to have been chosen to look after your fine castle and be associated with the Clan Menzies. The more I learn about the Castle’s history and the Clan the more I develop a stronger and stronger admiration for the distinctive ancestry of the Menzies Clan Chiefs and Clansmen. A top priority of my job at Castle Menzies will be maintaining and preserving the structural fabric and aesthetics of this 500-year old building in perfect condition. Another priority will be assisting in every way I can all Clan members to enjoy and be proud of this historic castle. The next Clan Menzies Society Gathering is in August 2007 at Weem I am looking forward to meeting as many members as possible.”

To conclude this brief profile, our Castle Administrator, John Jack, cordially invites Clan Society members, as well as all Menzies, their Septs, and interested persons to contact him at any time, in any way, if they feel he may be able to help regarding information on Castle Menzies the Clan and on Scotland in general.
